The former Prime Minister came up with the suggestion while addressing the inaugural session of the 7th national council of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the BNP’s labour wing, at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, on Saturday.

She also suggested that senior leaders be kept in the advisory committees.

The Sramik Dal was formed in 1979. Though the national council of the Sramik Dal is supposed to be held at the interval of every three years, some 1800 councillors have attended the council to elect new leadership before the expiry of the tenure of the current committee.

Khaleda said, “Mr. Nazrul (Nazrul Islam Khan) had served the organisation for a long period. Now he is in the BNP Standing Committee. The leadership should be passed on to the younger generation.”

“Juba Dal, Mahila Dal, Chhatra Dal and all other organisations should bring in new leaders to galvanize party activities.”

Khaleda said that the BNP-led 19-party alliance would wage a fresh anti-government movement after revamping the organisations.

She called upon the senior party leaders to shun nepotism while picking up new leadership for the party units. “Those who can lead the street movement from the front should take over the charge of the party units.”

Presided over by Sramik Dal President Nazrul Islam Khan, the function was addressed, among others, by BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Vice Chairman and former Sramik Dal President Abdullah Al Noman, Sramik Dal’s Working Committee President Abul Kashem Chowdhury, Vice President Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, Joint General Secretary Anwar Hossain, General Secretary Jafrul Hasan and Chairman of International Trade Union Confederation of Bangladesh Shah Mohammad Abu Jafar.
