The box arrived at Reza’s house at Senpara in Dhaka’s Kafrul area around 9pm on Saturday.

The former Satkhira-4 MP filed a general diary at the Kafrul Police station in connection with the incident.

He told bdnews24.com: “I have been sent a crude bomb and a letter in a sweetmeat box, and have been asked to pay Tk 5 million. I am feeling insecure.”

The letter reads: “We’re the people of Shahor Ali. We’re now out of jail after languishing there for several years. You must pay Tk 5 million to meet our expenses.”

Shahor Ali, a notorious extortionist, had died in an alleged encounter with RAB several years ago.

Reza said that the letter contained two cellular phone numbers and names such as Mohammad Sujon, Mohammad Nazrul Islam Jibon, Bhagina Dolon and Mohammad Shahid.

He said he had made calls at those numbers “but someone disconnected them”.

Reza has been running his own business ever since his expulsion from the Jatiya Party in 2012 for alleged breach of party discipline.

Kafrul Police Station OC Abdul Kaiyum told bdnews24.com: “We probing the mobile phone numbers he has mentioned in the general diary.”
