Juba League leader arrested

A local Juba League leader and three others have been arrested for illegally felling roadside government trees at Rajapur Upazila, in Jhalakati district, on Friday.

They were arrested from the Uttar Tarabunia village in the early hours of Friday.

The arrested leader has been identified as Afjal Hossain, Vice-President of the Saturia Union Parishad unit of ruling Awami League’s youth front, Juba League.

His associates Baschu Farazi, 28, Rubel Hawlader, 22, and Shahabuddin Hawlader, 25, of Dumjhuri village of Kawkhali Upazila in Pirojpur district are the others held.

Officer-in-Charge of the Rajapur Police Station Nazrul Islam told bdnews24.com that the police acted on a tip-off catching the four red-handed while they were cutting the trees lining the Naikathi-Bhandaria link road at Uttar Tarabunia village in the early hours of Friday.
The law enforcers also seized saws and axes they were using.
“Legal steps are being taken against them,” he added.
Alamgir Hossain, Forests Department official at Rajapur Upazila, told bdnews24.com that they seized a cut-down Chambal tree from the spot.
A case would be filed against those arrested, the forest official said.
