Satkania clashes kill 2

Two people including a child were killed when Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists clashed with the police in renewed violence on Saturday morning in Satkania of Chittagong amidst Jamaat’s nationwide atrocities.

Identities of the killed Abu Taher, 25, and Shahidul Islam, 13, were confirmed by Chittagong’s Police Additional Superintendent Mohammad Iltutmish.
It was reported that Taher, son of Abdur Rashid from Dhemsha in Satkania, sustained bullet injuries and later succumbed to his injuries at the As-Shefa Hospital.
No further details could be obtained in initial reports.
Jamaat-Shibir activists has been repeatedly blocking the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar road at several places in Satkania and Lohagara since Thursday, after International Crimes Tribunal-1 handed death penalty to Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.
Jamaat-Shibir activists were vandalising and attempting to set on fire several Chittagong-bound buses from Cox’s Bazar since morning, Satkania Police Station Officer in-Charge Mohammad Ismail told bdnews24.com.
Clashes lasted for 30 minutes when police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) tried to disperse the mob from the highway, bdnews24.com Correspondent reported.
Police were forced to fire in defence, only to be “retaliated by the Shibir men”, said the OC.
Several journalists told bdnews24.com that clashes were persisting till noon in phases.
Similar clashes were witnessed in Satkania and Lohagara on Thursday. Two including a policeman were killed. Another Hindu elder was killed in Bashkhali when attacked by Jamaat activists on the day.
What started as a peaceful shutdown on Thursday – aiming the verdict date of Sayedee – turned intensely violent nationwide soon after the death penalty was awarded.
Vandalism, arson in Sitakunda, Mirsarai
Shibir men set a covered van and a truck on fire in Sitakunda’s Battal on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Saturday morning, said Sitakunda Police Station OC Samiul Islam. Five people were nabbed from scene.
Meanwhile Shibir men brought out a procession on the highway at around 7:00am and vandalised several vehicles, Mirsarai Police Station OC Iftekhar Hassan told bdnews24.com. Seven people were nabbed from scene.
