Students of the SKMH High School and their parents said the incident took place on Wednesday.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, 10th graders Sima Ballav and Prasenjit Haldar said Headmaster Amrit Kumar Baroi had asked the students to get their uniforms stitched from the ‘Kiron Tailors’ at Kadambarhi.

But at least 50 students had their uniforms made from elsewhere at a cheaper price.

Peeved by that, Baroi beat at least 15 students of different classes with cane and made at least 25 others stand in the school ground under the sun for an hour, Sima and Prasenjit alleged.

They said the headmaster later also made arrangement for the treatment of injured students at school hostel following directives of the school management committee that day.

The injured include ninth graders Chayan Baroi, Pinku Sarkar, Raju Ballav, eighth grades Supriya Gain, Chayan Ballav and sixth grader ‘Haridas’.

Chayan Ballav told bdnews24.com: “The tailoring shop our headmaster recommended charges Tk 800 for each uniform. But the shop where we stitched our uniforms charges Tk 600.

“Since we did not get our uniform stitched from the shop he recommended, he became angry and beat us with a cane,” he said.

Supriya Gain said she was one of the students who were made to stand out in the ground as punishment.

Headmaster Amrit Kumar Baroi, however, have outright rejected the allegations levelled against him. “No such incident took place in my school. I did not cane any student,” he told bdnews24.com.

School management committee member Rabindra Nath Ballav claimed the headmaster was a ‘good person’. “Some people are spreading lies to harass him.”

Upazila education official Md Mahbubur Rahman said departmental actions against Amrit Kumar Baroi would be taken if the allegations were proved.
