Tax card holders’ number increased to 125 from 20

The government has decided to issue 125 tax cards to top tax payers instead of just 20 in an attempt to recognise more high tax payers of the country and encourage other to pay tax.

The Tax Card, which is a recognition to the top tax payers, also ensures some privileges to its holders like in the areas of receiving health services, access to national events and using the VIP lounge at the airport during traveling.

The decision came in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday with approval of the amendment of the National Tax Card Policy 2010 that proposes expanding the number of tax card holders to 125 from 20.

Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Islam briefed reporters that the draft proposes 64 tax card holders under personal category, 50 under organisation and the rest under other categories.

Previously, tax cards were handed to 20 individuals and organisations in two categories.

Personal category

Five senior citizens, five freedom fighters wounded in Liberation War, two disable persons, five female tax payers, and three young male tax payers under the age of 40.

Category by source of income

Five businessmen, five wage earners, five physicians, three journalists, three advocates, three engineers, two architects, two accountants, seven new tax payers, two sportsmen, two actor-actress, two singer-artist, and three more in this category.

Category by organisation
Four in banks, four in financial sources except banks, one in telecommunications, three in engineering, three in food and related sector, three in fuel, three in jute, five in spinning, four in pharmaceuticals, four in print and electronic media, three in real estates, seven in readymade garment, two in leather  industry and four in others.

Others
Four in poultry sector, one in local administration, two in private limited companies and four in other sectors.

“NBR may increase the number of top tax payers upon consultation with the Finance Minister,” said Shafiul.

The tax card holders and their families will be eligible for various privileges and facilities in booking rooms at residential hotels, availing cabin at government hospitals, booking air and railway tickets and will have the access to national events and VIP lounges at the air port. 

A committee will select the top tax payers in different categories, said Shafiul.
