Bangladesh sets $33.5 billion export target for 2015-16

The government has set an export target of $33.5 billion for the current financial year.

 

The target is 7.38 percent more than the 2014-15 fiscal.

The government had earlier planned to keep the target below than the previous financial year's for the first time in Bangladesh's history, considering that the target could not be achieved in 2014-15 fiscal year due to three months of political unrest.

The target was $33.2 billion that year, but Bangladesh exported goods worth $31.2 billion, which was 6 percent less.

The new target, which is $300 million more than the previous year's, was set in a meeting on Sunday.

Besides Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice-Chairman and CEO Shubashish Bose, representatives from exporters' associations BGMEA and BKMEA were present.

The target of growth for knitwear export has been set at 6.75 percent, and woven garments at 8 percent.

In 2014-15, Bangladesh earned $12.42 billion by exporting knitwear and $13.06 billion by woven garments.
