Tight security at war crimes tribunal ahead of Mir Quasem verdict

Security around the war crimes tribunal has been beefed up ahead of the verdict in Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali's trial.

The second International Crimes Tribunal, (ICT) headed by justice Obaidul Hassan, is expected to start delivering the verdict around 10.30am on Sunday.

Earlier, Mir Quasem was brought to the tribunal from the Dhaka Central Jail at around around 9.17am.

The war crimes accused was brought to Dhaka from Gazipur's Kahsimpur Central Jail on Friday

Security measures have been raised since the date of verdict was announced on Tuesday with the home ministry deciding to deploy Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) personnel.

Additional RAB and police personnel have been deployed in and around the tribunal, situated at the old High Court premises.

Everyone including journalists are being subjected to a thorough search by law enforces before being allowed to enter the tribunal.

High Court Police Outpost OC Abdus Salam said additional forces have been deployed in the High Court and tribunal premises since early morning Sunday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Md Masudur Rahman said that police personnel have been deployed in key points across the city to thwart any kind of violence. CCTV cameras have been installed in key points of Dhaka, he added.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is also on a strict vigil in the wake of the Mir Quasem's verdict, said its media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan.
