A murder case lodged around Thursday midnight also accuses the former Jessore lawmaker and his wife Dr Jesmin Ara Begum, said Dhanmondi Police Station OC Abu Bakar Siddique.
Doctors said Humayun’s wife Shamarukh Mahjabin Shyama, 24, was brought dead at Central Hospital in the evening from Tipu’s Dhanmondi residence.
Tipu’s family had claimed that she committed suicide.
But Shyama's friends and relatives suspected that she had been murdered.
Her father Nurul Islam, after arriving in Dhaka from Jessore, later alleged his daughter had been killed and filed the case against the trio.
Humayun, who was at the police station at the time, was arrested right away in the wee hours of Friday, OC Siddique told bdnews24.com.
Several hours earlier, Islam had alleged that attempts were being made to cover up his daughter’s murder.
Before the case was filed, bdnews24.com correspondent found ASP Reazul Islam, who is deputed at the Police Headquarters, sitting with Humayun in the OC’s room.
When approached, the ASP told bdnews24.com: “Humayun is my friend. I’m here for him. I’m not influencing anyone.”
“You can ask the OC if you like whether I was trying to put pressure over anything.”
OC Siddique around 1am announced the arrest of Humayun.
Shyama had been living in Tipu’s Dhanmondi residence since she was married to Humayun two years ago.
Earlier, Tipu told bdnews24.com that his wife Jesmin had taken Shyama to Central Hospital after she was found hanging in her room.
On the news of an unnatural death, police also went to the hospital.
There, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi Assistant Commissioner Rezaul Islam told bdnews24.com that they heard that the former MP’s daughter-in-law committed suicide.
Quoting Humayun, Dhanmondi police OC Siddique said, “Jesmin at first found that Shyama had no pulse. Then she was taken to the hospital.”
AC Rezaul Islam said they were told the couple had a row over a telephone call on Wednesday. According to Tipu’s family, both Shyama and Humayun left house on Thursday morning, but Shyama returned home at noon.
Later she was found hanging from a bathroom grill with a scarf round her neck, he said.
Her maternal uncle Shahidur Rahman and several classmates were at the hospital in the evening and they alleged that Shyama had been killed.
Regarding the allegation, DMP Ramna division Deputy Commissioner Abdul Baten told reporters, “Only an autopsy will ascertain whether it is a case of suicide or murder.”
Shyama’s body was later taken to Dhanmondi Police Station from the hospital. It was supposed to be autopsied at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
But her family demanded autopsy in presence of a magistrate.
Police said they would hand over the body to DMCH authorities in her family’s presence and they could move the court if they had any reservations about the autopsy.
