The former Jessore MP Khan Tipu Sultan claims Shamarukh Mahjabin Shyama, 24, wife of his elder son Humayun Sultan, committed suicide.
But Shama's relatives suspect she has been murdered.
She did her MBBS at Dhaka's Holy Family Medical College, where her mother-in-law Jesmin Ara is a doctor. She was pursuing FCPS at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medial College University.
Shyama had been living in the house of Tipu Sultan in Dhanmondi since she was married to Humayun Sultan two years ago.
Doctors declared her dead when she was taken to the Central Hospital from the Dhanmondi residence on Thursday, Tipu Sultan told bdnews24.com.
Hospital staff said Sultan's wife Ara had brought her daughter-in-law.
Police also rushed there.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi Assistant Commissioner Rejaul Islam said they heard that the daughter-in-law of the former MP committed suicide.
He said the couple had a row over a telephone call on Wednesday.
They left the house on Thursday morning. Shyama came back home and told their domestic help that she had some job to take care of in her room and locked the door from inside, he said.
She did not answer the door or took calls when she was called for lunch.
Others in the house broke into her room and found her hanging from a bathroom grill with a scarf round her neck, Islam added.
Shyama's father Nurul Islam, a Jessore resident, is a retired PWD engineer. Her mother died last year.
Her maternal uncle Shahidur Rahman and several classmates were seen at the hospital in the evening. But none of her in-laws were there.
Both Shyama's uncle Rahman and classmate Dalia Nowshin suspect she had been murdered.
Dalia said they had seen assault marks on her back.
Police took the body of Shyama to Dhanmondi Police Station from the Central Hospital. It is supposed to be autopsied at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
"We'll be able to ascertain after autopsy whether it is a case of suicide or murder," he said.
Shyama’s father Islam, now in Dhaka, alleged her daughter had been killed.
He said that before the marriage they were told that Humayun Sultan was a barrister, but later they found out it they had been lied to.
“We all accepted it. Even then they killed my daughter,” said Islam, sobbing.
Shyama’s family demanded autopsy before a magistrate.
Police said they would hand over the body to DMCH authorities in presence of a magistrate.
They said Shyama’s family could move the court if they had reservations about the autopsy.
