He was the councillor of Narail municipality’s ward-1 and a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader.
Kayes was the son of Md Anwar Hossain Molla from Dumurtala Eidgahparha in Narail town.
Narail Sadar Police Station OC Sheikh Matiar Rahman said Kayes was accused in eight cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner (East) Jahangir Hossain Matubbar said the shooting had taken place around 3am near the AGB Colony.
“We suspect he was involved in trouble-making during the blockade,” Matubbar said.
He said the area was raided following a tip-off that a group of troublemakers had gathered there. The men opened fire at the policemen, forcing them to retaliate, he added.
A bullet-riddled man was found on the spot after a while and taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Matubbar said.
Doctors declared him dead around 4:30am.
A pistol, two rounds of ammunition and five handmade bombs were recovered from the spot, Matubbar claimed.
The victim’s wife, Jannatul Ferdous, told bdnews24.com that Kayes had gone to Dhaka several days back.
“I spoke to him around 8pm on Friday over the mobile phone. As I called him again after a while, an unknown man received the call. I heard noise that time. I was unable to contact him since then,” she said.
Ferdous said another unknown person had called her from her husband’s phone number around Monday noon and informed her of his death.
He asked her to take the body from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Ferdous said her husband had gone into hiding after being sued for attacks on police at Narail on Dec 11, 2013.
She alleged police had killed her husband on false charges.
DMCH Police Post Inspector Mozammel Haq said Ferdous’s elder brother Adv Zahidur Rahman identified the body in the afternoon.
