Marzan was involved with Shibir
Marzan had enrolled in the department in the 2012-2013 sessions for a bachelor’s with Honours degree after passing Dakhil and Alim exams from Pabna Alyia Madrasa.
Vice-Chancellor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury on Tuesday told bdnews24.com: “Marzan went missing after sitting for the sixth test of second year final held on Feb 14, 2015.
“He is not a student of Chittagong University anymore as he didn’t take readmission in the third year.”
Iftekhar Uddin said they identified Marzan after seeing his photo in the media and crosschecking them with his certificates and photo in university documents.
Marzan’s classmates are now in the fourth year. He obtained GPA 3.48 in the first-year final and took the tests on six of the 10 subjects in the second-year final.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit is investigating the case started over the killings of 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners, and two police officers in the July 1-2 attack on Holey Artisan Bakery and O’ Kitchen at Dhaka’s diplomatic district Gulshan.
After identifying Marzan as ‘one of the masterminds’ of the attack and releasing his photo last Friday, the unit’s chief Monirul Islam said this youth had disseminated the photos and messages sent by the militants from inside the eatery.
Then on Monday evening, detectives reportedly picked up his father Nizam Uddin from Afuria village in Pabna.
The family said Marzan did not contact them in the past eight months.
Later on same day, CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said Marzan’s name was not on the list of six absentee students they had provided to police.
Before his detention, Marzan’s father Nizam had told reporters he had only come to know about his son’s current status after seeing his photo released by police.
Marzan is the second of hosiery factory worker Nizam’s 10 children.
Nizam said, “We were in touch with him in the first few months after he enrolled in the university, but then he nearly stopped communicating. We thought he was not talking to us because he had married.”
CU departments to be show-caused
Chittagong University authorities had submitted a list of six students of different departments who had been skipping classes after police sought it following the Gulshan cafe attack. All the six absentee students were later found.
But several departments including the Arabic department did not give their lists of missing students, VC Iftekhar Uddin said.
“Show-cause notices will be sent to all these departments for not complying with the university order,” he said.
He said anti-terrorism cell will also be formed with the heads of all departments.
