The protesters, coming from across a broad social spectrum, took out processions at Nabinagar Upazila on Friday and held a rally later.

Speakers at the rally said, although the local freedom fighters had shown much gallantry during the Liberation War, the people of Nabinagar still felt ashamed as the top war criminal hailed from there.

Many said the stigma had been removed with Azam's death.

The Jamaat leader hailed from Nabinagar Upazila's Birgaon village.

Azam, who led the anti-liberation forces during the War, died at the BSMMU on Thursday while serving a 90-year sentence for war crimes.
