Police said 57-year-old Billal Hossain’s body was found in the early hours of Monday on the stairs inside the mosque at Islampur area.

“There are five stab wounds—three on the chest and one each on the hand and back. The mosque’s imam found the body when he came for the morning prayers and informed the police,” said Inspector Moudud Ahmed of Bangshal police.

Billal used to live in a room, which was found locked from outside, on the second floor of the mosque.

“The condition of the body suggests he was murdered around midnight before he could go to his room,” said Inspector Ahmed.

He added that local residents could not indicate any motive behind the murder or who might have killed the muezzin.

The mosque’s imam Tajul Islam told bdnews24.com some unidentified persons attacked and beat up Billal in his room on the second floor.

Billal had filed a police complaint over the assault.
