Government awaits SC judgement to execute Kamaruzzaman’s verdict

The government is awaiting judgement of the Supreme Court for execution of the death-verdict of war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, Law Minister Anisul Haque has said.

The minister told reporters after a meeting of the Ministry of Law at the Secretariat on Tuesday, "You may be curious to know about the execution of Kamaruzaman. But the meeting did not discuss the issue."

When asked about the latest update on the matter, "Last update hasn't arrived. We are waiting for the Supreme Court’s directive."

Al Badr chief of Mymensingh region in 1971, Kamaruzzaman, was sentenced to death on May 9 last year by the International Crimes Tribunal for his crimes against humanity.
The Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman, the Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, in the final verdict on Nov 3.

The prosecution said the Tribunal would issue the death warrant of the convict after getting the Appellate Division’s verdict.

After that, the government will execute the verdict. For this the government might also use the Jail Code.

The code states that every death-row convict can appeal for presidential clemency. The clemency will have to be sought within seven days.

The meeting discussed the law-and-order situation in the country. Junior Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also present at the meeting.

"(The meeting) held discussions on law-and-order situation. The situation is fine. We also discussed about the possibility of quickly wrapping up some cases," the law minister said.

"That includes cases which are in the monitoring cell."
