China has reiterated its position on key issues with the United States ahead of US President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to Beijing.
In a post on X, the Chinese Embassy in the US said there were “four red lines” in China-US relations that “must not be challenged”.
The issues listed as non-negotiable were Taiwan, democracy and human rights, political systems, and China’s development rights, reports NDTV.
The embassy also said China and the US should work towards a “strategic, constructive and stable” relationship based on “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation”.
Chinese President Xi Jinping first outlined the “four red lines” after meeting then-US president Joe Biden in November 2024, NDTV says.
Taiwan is expected to be a major topic during talks between Trump and Xi, since Beijing considers the self-governed island part of China and has repeatedly opposed US arms sales to Taipei.
On Wednesday, ahead of Trump’s arrival, China criticised Washington’s military ties with Taiwan.
Zhang Han, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said Beijing firmly opposed any form of military cooperation or weapons sales between the US and Taiwan.
She described Taiwan as “the core of China’s core interests” and said the US was obligated to honour commitments made under the “One China” policy.
The US officially acknowledges Beijing’s position on Taiwan without recognising Chinese sovereignty over the island, continuing to provide Taipei with defensive support, reads the NDTV report.
In December, the Trump administration approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, the largest such deal to date.
Other issues expected to feature in the summit include trade tensions, artificial intelligence competition, and China’s controls on rare-earth exports, on Trump’s first trip to China since 2017.
