Finland’s foreign ministry has announced plans to shut down its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar in 2026.
Arab News reports the ministry attributed the closures to “operational and strategic reasons.”
The ministry also highlighted its frequent review of the effectiveness of Finland’s diplomatic posts abroad to determine how well they correspond to current and long-term needs.
The strategic assessment launched by the Finnish foreign ministry this year reflects the country’s foreign and security policy interests while addressing trade-promotion activities of Team Finland, according to Arab News.
In the initial stage, Finland expanded its presence in the major US export market by opening a consulate general in Houston this year.
The ministry also shared plans to establish commercial offices in 2026 at some former locations, with the rationale outlined in ministry statements, Arab News has reported.
“The long-term development of the network of missions abroad also means that some missions will be closed.
“The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has decided to close the embassies of Finland in Islamabad, Kabul and Yangon in 2026,” the report quoted a statement from Finnish authorities.
Arab News also reported Finland’s planned embassy closures will be enacted through a presidential decree and are being driven by reasons including shifting political conditions and limited commercial and economic ties with the affected nations.
The foreign ministry said the move aims to focus resources on countries of greater strategic value to Finland.
The outlet quoted Foreign Affairs Minister Elina Valtonen as saying that reshaping the overseas mission network will help Finland adapt to a rapidly changing operating environment, as well as better manage its external relations in line with national priorities.
Pakistan had not issued a response to the development.
Finland’s embassy in Islamabad, first set up in 1989, was reopened in 2022 after a period of suspension, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.
The two countries have maintained regular bilateral political talks since 2014, with the most recent session held in Helsinki in November 2023.
The Arab News reported two-way goods trade totalling about $82.5 million in fiscal year 2023-24, with Pakistan’s exports to Finland recorded at $28.7 million and imports at $53.7 million.
