The Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has called for the arrest of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the killing of senior Palestinian Authority (PA) officials if the United Nations recognises Palestinian statehood.
Middle East Eye reported that Ben Gvir issued the demand ahead of a UN Security Council vote on a US-backed Gaza peace plan that mentions a “credible pathway” to Palestinian statehood.
On X, the minister wrote that Israel must issue orders for “targeted killings” of top PA officials, whom he labelled “terrorists”.
He said a solitary confinement cell at Ketziot Prison had already been prepared for Abbas.
As per the UK-based channel, the Security Council vote on the peace plan is scheduled for Monday, with the draft resolution citing conditions for Palestinian self-determination and statehood after reforms to the PA and redevelopment in Gaza.
Kan News reported on Sunday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government had launched a final push to alter the draft and remove references to statehood.
The National Commission for Palestinian Popular Action (NCPPA) issued a “strong response” on Sunday rejecting US proposals to place Gaza under an externally imposed transitional administration, describing the idea as “a new colonialism”, it said.
Middle East Eye said the NCPPA, a coalition of several Palestinian groups and diaspora organisations, said any attempt to form a governing structure “outside the will of the Palestinian people” undermines their right to self-determination and repackages older forms of domination “under updated labels”.
The commission said decisions about Gaza’s future must be made by Palestinians and must uphold territorial unity, the legitimacy of resistance to Israeli occupation, and the rights to freedom and self-determination under international law, it added.
