Despite a market ban, the use of polythene remains widespread. It can still be found in the waste extracted from rivers, drains and other water bodies. A group of low-income individuals make a living by processing these environmentally harmful plastics for recycling.
Buried under plastic waste, Shuvadya canal, next to the Buriganga river in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, is dying. The entire canal is filled with garbage and clothing waste from small garment factories.
