Repairing boats ahead of monsoon

Water levels are rising in the Buriganga River as the monsoon approaches. Boatmen are repairing their dinghies along the riverbanks to prepare for the season, ensuring their main source of income isn’t affected by the weather.

Buriganga remains unchanged

Waste from hundreds of factories in Dhaka's Shyampur and nearby areas is constantly feeding into the water of the Buriganga River. Whether it's the dry season or the monsoon, pollution in the Buriganga runs in sync. The pollution not only changes the colour of the water, but also spreads a foul smell.

Watermelons at Wiseghat

River vessels are bringing watermelons from Bangladesh’s southern districts to the fruit warehouses at the Wiseghat Dock in Old Dhaka every day. Traders buy them at wholesale prices. Buyers say the prices are reasonable at the moment.

A ‘canvas’ of pollution

The Babu Bazar Bridge, a vital artery linking Old Dhaka to Mawa via Keraniganj, has become a daily ordeal. Buses stop for long stretches to pick up passengers, battery-powered rickshaws crowd the lanes, and pedestrians risk their lives crossing in the middle of traffic. Despite signs and stairways, the bridge is a tangle of congestion and danger.

Sand dredging on every stretch of the Buriganga

Dredgers operate in the Buriganga River in the Munshikhola area of Shyampur, Dhaka. Local residents say sand is being illegally brought from bulkhead vessels and deposited near or inside the river’s designated boundary.

Pollution choking the Buriganga

Large volumes of untreated waste from more than a hundred printing, knitting and dyeing factories in Dhaka’s Shyampur area are flowing into the Buriganga River every day. Water mixed with dyes and chemicals is being discharged directly into the river, turning it dark and foul. High levels of ammonia, oil, grease and chemicals such as phenol pose a serious threat to the river’s ecosystem and public health.
