Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is expected to keep the core of the team that survived a dramatic comeback against Egypt when the world champions face Switzerland in the World Cup quarter-finals, according to TyC Sports.
The report said Argentina’s coaching staff do not want to make sweeping changes to the side, despite the team trailing Egypt 2-0 until late in the last-16 tie before turning the match around.
Scaloni and his staff believe Argentina controlled the game and created clear scoring chances, with the main problems coming in finishing and a few defensive lapses, TyC Sports reported.
The two main selection doubts are at right-back and centre-forward. Nahuel Molina is competing with Gonzalo Montiel, while Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez are again fighting for the starting role in attack.
Molina and Álvarez were below their best against Egypt, while Montiel and Martínez impressed after coming on in the second half.
Lautaro, known as “El Toro”, was involved in Argentina’s second goal and produced the assist for the third.
Scaloni will use Argentina’s final two training sessions before the Switzerland match to settle his line-up.
TyC Sports says one or two changes are expected, but the structure of the team is likely to remain intact.
Argentina’s probable XI: Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina or Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Nicolás Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández, Leandro Paredes, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez or Lautaro Martínez.
