The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has suspended two police personnel over allegations of “unprofessional conduct” involving cricketer Nayeem Hasan, who was reportedly assaulted by officers.

The CMP also formed a three-member probe committee, Commissioner Hasan Md Showkat Ali said on Saturday.

The suspended officers are Sub-Inspector (unarmed) Shafikul Islam Bhuiyan of Khulshi Police Station and constable Md Russel Chowdhury.

Around 12pm on Saturday, the CMP commissioner and senior officers visited the national team player at his residence in Bahaddarhat Faridapara.

At 11:55am, a media statement signed by Assistant Commissioner (PR) Aminur Rashid confirmed the suspensions.

Aminur told bdnews24.com that a departmental case will be filed, saying Nayeem has submitted a written complaint.

According to a media statement, Nayeem encountered an “unfortunate incident” with Khulshi Police night mobile-3 team at Lalkhan Bazar while returning from Dhaka on Friday night.

Preliminary investigation found allegations of unprofessional behaviour during duty, leading to immediate administrative action against the personnel involved.

Nayeem was allegedly assaulted by law-enforcing officials despite identifying himself and was then taken to Lalkhan Bazar police station.

Later, his father, relatives and local residents went to the police station.

Cricketers, both former and current, condemned the incident on social media.
