Dhaka, April 15 (bdnews24.com) - IM Abdullah Al Rakib became the champion in the 33rd National Chess Championship securing 11 points from 13 matches on Sunday.
Rakib, who earned his third norm in the previous round drawing against GM Reefat Bin Sattar, beat FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman Emon in the last round and earned a 13-game grandmasters norm.
He earned his GM norm to his 2618 rating performance from the championship after earning the first norm in Kolkata in 2001 and second in the Leonine Rating Chess in Dhaka in 2004.
Rakib will be country's fourth Grand Master after Niaz Morshed, Ziaur Rahman and Reefat Bin Sattar.
"We will apply to the FIDE for Rakib's Grand Master status soon after arranging all relevant documents." said a Bangladesh Chess Federation official.
Zia and Rajib earned 9½ points each and will play a play-off match Monday to decide the runner-up.
Reefat finished fifth with eight points. Niaz Murshed and FM Taibur Rahman earned 7 points each and will face each other in another play-off.
