Dhaka, Dec 16 (bdnews24.com)-The law firm headed by Dr Kamal Hossain has sought to dispel the controversy centring a bail prayer reportedly filed on behalf of the famed jurist in a sedition case.
"No appeal for bail was made on behalf of Dr Kamal Hossain. An appeal was made seeking ban on arrest and harassment when he returns home. Neither was any favour sought from the judge." Sara Hossain, a barrister and daughter of Dr Hossain, told bdnews24.com Saturday.
"Attempts to create confusion over the matter is unfortunate," she said.
When contacted, sources in Hossain's law office said, "Dr Hossain is abroad to attend an international arbitration. Bail petition for him in the sedition case will be submitted when he returns home after Christmas."
Reports on the High Court's embarrassment in hearing Hossain's bail petition were published in some newspapers on Friday. The reports said the court did not give permission for hearing of Hossain's bail petition as a lawyer from Dr Hossain's chamber, Ramzan Ali Shikder, pursued Justice Md Raisuddin for the bail on phone.
However, lawyers at Hossain's chamber said, on December 6, a phone call was made to the justice only to know whether the bench would sit the following day as the judges were observing work stoppage then.
On December 10, seven lawyers including Barrister Amir-ul Islam and Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud got anticipatory bail in the same sedition case from the High Court bench comprising Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah and Justice Md Raisuddin.
The same bench granted bail to Barrister Tania Amir on December 12. No petition for anticipatory bail was made on behalf of Hossain as he was abroad.
On December 5, a court keeper of the Supreme Court filed a sedition case against the lawyers.
The case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station in connection with widespread vandalism in the Supreme Court following an abrupt suspension of proceedings of a writ petition challenging the legality of President Iajuddin Ahmed's holding the post of the chief adviser.
The suspension order came from the chief justice when the High Court bench was about to deliver the verdict.
