Dhaka, Aug 31 (bdnews24.com) -- A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Saiful Islam Duke, the nephew of BNP chief Khaleda Zia, to jail after four days of remand in the August 21 grenade attack case.
Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrates (CMM) Court passed the order rejecting his bail petition.
Earlier on August 26, the court granted the CID four days to quiz Duke after they had arrested him whether he was involved in the grenade attack of August 21 of 2004 an Awami League rally.
Duke has given new information about the involvement of different important persons in the Aug 21 grenade attack, according the remand report.
The investigation officer of the case, CID special superintendent Abdul Kahar Akand, mentioned that Duke helped militant leader Mohammad Tajuddin, who supplied grenades for the attack, to fly back to Pakistan.
Tajuddin is the brother of Abdus Salam Pintu, a state minister of the ruling BNP government at that time.
The police is also said to have unearthed important information in this connection.
According to the case details, Lt Commander Saiful Islam Duke, 49, also the personal secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, helped Tajuddin, one of the accused of the case, in flying to Pakistan.
Moreover, Duke is said to have close connections with people accused in the case who are absconding.
During the interrogation, the arrested gave information about Duke's involvement at different times.
The CID application had stated that it was important to question Duke to learn more about the collection and supply of grenades, and the names and addresses of other persons involved.
On Aug 21, 2004, 24 leaders and workers of Awami League were killed and 200 others injured in the grenade attack on Bangabandhu Avenue.
