Former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak has been placed under arrest in another murder case linked to last year's July Uprising.

Other political figures formally arrested in the case include former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam and Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon.

As he was being taken to court in handcuffs, wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest, Palak told reporters: “Everything has an end.”

Asked what Palak meant by his remark, his lawyer Tariqul Islam said: “I wasn't with him at the time. Perhaps he was referring to the current situation."

The defendants were taken to the court to be formally arrested in the case filed at Banani Police Station over the death of a factory worker named Md Shahjahan during the student-led mass uprising that toppled the Awami League government.

Palak spoke with his lawyer Tariqul while standing in the dock.

Following a hearing on the plea from the investigating officer, Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Yasir Arafat, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadekur Rahman ordered their arrest in the case.

They were taken out of the courtroom and sent back to the lock-up around 11:24am.

"He [Palak] discussed his case. He spoke about the death of former minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun due to the lack of medical care and about Dipu Moni not receiving proper medical care. However, he said that his health is fine."

According to the case details, on Jul 19 last year, 22-year-old factory worker Shahjahan was returning after his lunch break and joined a procession beneath the Mohakhali Flyover. He was shot at that time.

He died on Jul 24 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

His mother, Sajeda, initiated the case against 97 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, at Banani Police Station on Dec 18.
