Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has returned to his residence in Kolkata after receiving two days of treatment at a local hospital.
Quader, who has been in India since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata’s New Town after complaining of severe throat pain and breathing difficulties.
Party insiders confirmed that the former minister, who is currently a fugitive from Bangladeshi law, also suffered from severe toothache during his stay.
He was discharged on Monday afternoon following an improvement in his condition.
A Jubo League leader, who said he is in contact with Quader’s family, told bdnews24.com that Quader had been experiencing throat pain, breathing difficulties and dental discomfort for several days due to cold-related complications, prompting his hospitalisation.
Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim added on Monday evening from India that Quader’s health had stabilised, though he continued to manage several long-term ailments.
Quader’s illness reportedly prevented him from joining in a virtual event on Jan 4 marking the anniversary of the party’s now-banned student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League.
During that event, Chhatra League General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan -- who has also been absent from the public view since the government change -- informed supporters that Quader was too unwell to join.
Following the July Uprising, the interim government banned the Chhatra League under the Anti-Terrorism Act for its role in suppressing student-led protests.
Activities of the Awami League itself were subsequently restricted.
Dhaka courts have issued arrest warrants against Quader, a key figure in the ousted administration, who faces multiple murder cases and charges at the International Crimes Tribunal.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has also initiated an inquiry into allegations of corruption during his tenure as road transport and bridges minister.
Quader has been living in Kolkata since crossing the border Roughly three months after the fall of Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024.
In a previous interview with the Indian news outlet The Wall, he recounted hiding in a bathroom for five hours on the day of the fall.
The 76-year-old politician has a history of heart disease. In March 2019, he was hospitalised with three coronary artery blocks and was eventually flown to Singapore for treatment.
