Former minister Lutfozzaman Babar says RAB was ‘not used politically’ during BNP rule

“Not even for an hour did we use it politically, and no one can prove otherwise,” Babar says after paying his respects to Khaleda Zia

Former BNP home minister Lutfozzaman Babar has asserted that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was “never politically exploited” during the party’s tenure from 2001 to 2006.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday after visiting the grave of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Babar recalled his close working relationship with the party chairperson.

“When I requested anything, [Khaleda] granted it without hesitation. On the RAB’s formation, we never used it politically, not even for an hour. No one can claim otherwise, and no proof exists,” he said.

Babar oversaw the RAB during its inception on Mar 26, 2004. Later, the RAB faced widespread allegations of extrajudicial killings in “crossfire” incidents, continuing under subsequent Awami League governments, with human rights organisations recommending its disbandment.

He highlighted Khaleda’s uncompromising stance even towards errant BNP leaders, noting her commitment to the country’s sovereignty and public safety.

Babar also drew parallels with her son and the BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, praising his vision for law and order and anti-corruption measures, which he said have already been placed before the nation.

Babar was arrested on May 28, 2007 under the Army-controlled caretaker government. He faced multiple trials, receiving two death sentences and one life imprisonment, but was acquitted after appeals following the July Uprising and released on Jan 16, 2025. He is now running from the Netrokona-4 seat as a BNP candidate.

On his visit to Khaleda’s grave, he described it as a personal gesture, underscoring his enduring loyalty and admiration for the leader, and appealed for prayers to help the BNP and Tarique implement their vision for the country.
