Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has joined a workers’ rally organised by the ruling BNP to mark May Day.

The event, organised by the party’s labour wing Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal in Dhaka's Naya Paltan on Friday, serves as the BNP's largest public show of strength in the capital since its landslide victory in the general election held on Feb 12.

The programme began around 2:30pm, with BNP chief Tarique set to address the event as chief guest.

Workers from industrial belts in surrounding districts, including Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj and Manikganj, joined the gathering, organisers said.

Although morning rain left parts of the capital waterlogged, conditions improved before noon, allowing processions to converge on the venue.

Activists wearing red caps and T-shirts arrived in groups, carrying banners and chanting slogans.

A stage was set up on a red-carpeted platform in front of the BNP headquarters, with an extensive sound system installed across nearby areas, including Fakirapool, Paltan and Kakrail.

Portraits of the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman, former BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and their son Tarique were displayed on either side of the north-facing stage.

Security was tightened in and around Naya Paltan ahead of the event.
