National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has formally announced an “electoral understanding” with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as the country approaches the parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a press conference at their Bangla Motor office in Dhaka on Sunday night, Nahid said they engaged with Jamaat and eight like-minded parties to ensure a fair and competitive national election and referendum.
“Based on these discussions, we have reached agreement on an electoral understanding,” he said.
He explained that the arrangement serves a dual purpose: “Firstly, to navigate the electoral threshold, and secondly, to maintain unity in the reform, justice, and anti-hegemony movement.”

Nahid emphasised that the media briefing was held to communicate this significant party decision before the February elections.
Earlier, the party had declared preparedness to contest in the election independently. However, Nahid’s announcement on Sunday confirmed the alliance with Jamaat.
Earlier in the day, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman confirmed NCP’s integration into the eight-party coalition, now including 10 parties with LDP in the fold as well.
Shafiqur said the alliance welcomed “two new members -- the NCP and the LDP”.
He added, “Oli Ahmed of the LDP is present here, and Nahid Islam of the NCP has just met with us; they have now joined our coalition. They will hold a press conference later tonight to provide full details.”
Amid rumours of the NCP forming an alliance with Jamaat ahead of the general election, this announcement by the Jamaat chief has expanded the size of the “8-party alliance involved in the simultaneous movement”.
Declaring that they would continue their movement and struggle for multiple demands despite being an electoral alliance, Shafiqur said: "Whether you call it an alliance or not, we are even stronger than an alliance. We are more united."
Some media reports have said that an agreement was reached between Jamaat and the NCP concerning the sharing of 30 seats for the national election.
On the topic, the Jamaat chief said their seat-sharing arrangement is "almost complete".
On Dec 11, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter.
According to the announced schedule, the parliamentary poll and the referendum will be held on Feb 12.
The deadline for submitting nomination papers to participate in this vote is Dec 29.
The announcement of the alliance from Jamaat, the NCP, and the LDP came on the day before.
