The National Citizen Party (NCP) has withdrawn the show-cause notices issued to five of its leaders over an unauthorised trip to Cox’s Bazar, effectively bringing the matter to a close.

The decision was announced in a media statement signed by Joint Member Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin Sifat on Saturday.

The five leaders are: Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for the northern region; Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser for the southern region; Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary; Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jara; and Joint Convenor Khaled Saifullah.

The group had left Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar in a state of discontent, reportedly displeased with the “July Proclamation” announced by the interim government.

Some of them had initially been invited to the event.

Their trip drew attention amid unverified rumours that the leaders went to meet former US ambassador Peter Haas in Cox’s Bazar, although no evidence of a meeting was found.

Amid the speculation, the five were served with show-cause notices, to which they duly responded.

The leaders, however, criticised the move, questioning the justification of such notices amid rumours of character assassination and secret meetings.

The media statement said the party did not find any breach of discipline in the incident after reviewing the group’s replies.

“As per the directives of Convenor Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, the show-cause notices have been withdrawn and the matter stands resolved,” it read.
