The National Citizen Party will contest the national election using the “Shapla” or water lily symbol, according to Sarjis Alam, the party’s chief organiser for the northern region.

Speaking after the party’s district coordination committee meeting in Jamalpur on Monday, he said there are “no legal barriers” to awarding NCP the symbol.

Sarjis indicated that if verdicts in high-profile cases involving Sheikh Hasina and others are delivered within December, the election scheduled for February should proceed “without hindrance”.

He also said the government would not move towards an election without a legal basis for the July Charter.

When asked about the government’s plan to lease three terminals of Chittagong Port to foreign companies, Sarjis said: “If the government takes any decision in the national interest or to keep political parties away from control, the NCP will not oppose it.

“But if any decision goes against the country’s interest, the NCP will oppose it.”

He said the NCP might join any alliance in the election but would contest under its own symbol.

“NCP will not take part in the polls under another party’s name or symbol,” he added.
