Sonu, who was kidnapped from India’s capital in December 2010, was brought back to New Delhi from Bangladesh on Tuesday.

“I am feeling happy,” said Sonu to media waiting outside the VVIP lounge at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, while securely holding on to his parents.

After Sonu was kidnapped by unidentified people from Seemapuri in 2010, his parents began what seemed an endless search for their son. After three years, his case was closed in 2013.

It was only recently that one ‘Jamal’ from Bangladesh got a clue to Sonu’s whereabouts  and informed his parents in New Delhi.

Sonu was living in a shelter in Jessore in Bangladesh for last several months.

Sonu’s father ‘Mehboob’ sought the Indian government’s help once he learnt about his son’s whereabouts.

India’s ministry of external affairs (MEA) facilitated a DNA test that proved positive.

“Sonu, who was kidnapped from Delhi, was found in a shelter home in Bangladesh. We matched the DNA with that of his mother. The test is positive,” India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had said recently.

“We are very happy Sonu has returned home,” said Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh V Shringla.

Immediately on his arrival in New Delhi, Sonu was taken to the MEA office, where he and his parents met Sushma Swaraj.

“From Geeta to Gurpreet, and now to Sonu! EAM @Sushma Swaraj welcomes the young boy Sonu home from Bangladesh,” tweeted MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

Although the authorities are tight-lipped on the sequences of Sonu’s kidnapping and his rescue, it is believed that Delhi Police along with other investigative agencies would now try to get the details of Sonu’s abduction.

Several kidnapping and missing cases are registered in police stations across New Delhi every month.
