As reports of continued BSF push-ins persist, an Assam politician has denounced the practice as "unlawful and contrary to the Constitution of India", reports India Today.
On Tuesday, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) President and Binnakandi Assembly constituency MLA Badruddin Ajmal also expressed his resentment on the detection, deportation and pushback of suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals, the report said.
The AIUDF leader said the information he had cited earlier was based on government data, pledging to provide the exact figures later.
"Pushback is absolutely unlawful; it is illegal. It is wrong, and it shouldn't happen. It is an atrocity," Ajmal was quoted as saying to reporters.
According to him, the rule of law and constitutional values must guide all actions concerning the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants.
"In this day and age, the world runs on law, and the world runs on the Constitution. Regarding our Constitution of India, the people doing this are the ones who do not respect the Constitution," he added.
The crackdown on "illegal immigrants" intensified especially after the last assembly elections held in April and May, with most reports of push-ins coming from bordering areas near West Bengal, where the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power for the first time.
