Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS), a centralised digital platform to modernise operations across the country’s land ports by integrating cargo, passenger and vehicle processing on a single interface, the Hindustan Times reports.
Named Vinimay, the platform is a key component of Narendra Modi government’s four-pronged Smart Border initiatives.
It is expected to help significantly reduce paperwork, waiting times, and improve coordination among border agencies.
“The Land Port Management System has been designed keeping in mind the requirements of all stakeholders, while giving special emphasis to security. Together with the Smart Border initiative, this system will help create an impregnable and secure border management framework,” Shah said at the launch.
The initiatives will develop a more secure and modern border management system, helping to curb illegal activities while reinforcing border security.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said the new system gives users a single access point and allows border security, regulatory bodies, and other government agencies to share real-time information.
“LPMS integrates cargo management, vehicle processing and inter-agency coordination on one platform, allowing border agencies to access and exchange information in real time,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The platform is expected to eliminate nearly 90 percent of paperwork at land ports and reduce truck waiting times by 40 percent to 60 percent. Gate processing time is projected to fall by 22 percent to 35 percent through measures such as Single Electronic Window clearances and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based gate operations,” the Hindustan Times said, citing the statement.
India currently has 15 operational land ports and another 11 are to be developed over the next two to three years to take the total to 26, said Shah.
Trade through the land ports has increased from Rs 50 billion in 2014 to Rs 830 billion currently, according to government data.
Shah praised Indian Prime Minister Modi for leading the Land Ports Authority.
“Land ports have played an important role in the overall development of border areas, promoting legitimate trade and finding solutions to challenges like migration,” he added.
The fully digital system aims to ease long queues of trucks and passengers at border checkposts, allowing trucks to schedule inspections and registration online.
Shah said trade through the land ports has increased sixteenfold over the past 12 years.
