With the parliamentary election and referendum approaching, the Ministry of Railways has ordered authorities to take the highest level of precaution to protect passengers, trains, and railway infrastructure.
The directive, issued on Saturday, emphasised that “self-interested groups may attempt sabotage or create instability around the parliamentary election and referendum”.
The ministry noted that public transport, particularly railways, could be targeted in such scenarios.
The election and referendum are scheduled for Feb 12, with nearly 2,000 candidates, including 51 political parties and independents, contesting this year.
The ousted Awami League has been barred from campaigning, and its registration with the Election Commission has been suspended, excluding the party from this election.
In view of potential sabotage, the ministry outlined measures for relevant departments and officers, including the implementation of safety protocols, and providing progress reports.
Particular emphasis was placed on effective enforcement so passengers can use railway services without disruption and any attempted sabotage is pre-emptively prevented.
The ministry also urged the public to remain vigilant.
The order stated: “If any sabotage or attempts to damage passengers, trains, or railway infrastructure are observed, the nearest station staff, gatekeepers, or Railway Police should be immediately informed.”
Citizens are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity or incidents via Bangladesh Railway’s hotline at 131.
These directives aim to safeguard railway operations and protect public safety during a critical electoral period.
