On the first day of his election campaign in Dhaka, Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairman Tarique Rahman has sought votes for the “sheaf of paddy” and the “spade” symbols.

At a rally in Tejgaon for the Dhaka-12 seat on Sunday night, he asked voters to back Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh.

“We are supporting one of our comrades, Saiful Haque, who stood beside us during the past movement in the parliamentary polls,” said Tarique.

Requesting people to vote for “spade”, he said, voting for the election symbol means voting for “sheaf of paddy”.

Tarique warned people about a political conspiracy to strip them of their political rights.

“We saw in the newspaper that a member of that political party was caught by law enforcers while trying to make fake ballot seals two days ago. You must stay vigilant so that no one can manipulate the results. Remember, a Kodal victory means a BNP victory,” he said.

Tarique visited the office of Dainik Dinkal in Tejgaon after attending the street rally in the Dhaka-12. He is the publisher and editor of the newspaper.

He attended another rally at 11pm at Badda’s Satarekul to campaign for MA Qayyum, who is contesting in the parliamentary polls on a BNP ticket.

On Sunday, Tarique attended seven street rallies in seven constituencies.

His Dhaka election campaign began at 3:30pm at the ECB Chattar in the Dhaka-17 seat, from where the BNP leader is contesting in the general election.

He also attended rallies in the Dhaka-16, Dhaka-15, Dhaka-14 and Dhaka-13 constituencies.

In his speeches, the BNP chairman said that if his party comes to power, they will provide permanent housing for slum dwellers in various Dhaka constituencies, eliminate waterlogging, build hospitals, widen roads, ease traffic congestion, create playgrounds, and make Dhaka and other cities “safe”.

The BNP chief will continue campaigning in the capital for a second consecutive day on Monday. He will kick off the day’s campaign at 11am with a street rally at the Kamal Ataturk Avenue playground in Banani, which covers his Dhaka-17 constituency.
