How battery-run autorickshaws are charged

Although it is illegal to operate battery-powered three-wheeler easybikes and rickshaws on Bangladesh's streets, the demand for the vehicles keeps rising as revenue streams from them are strong and the physical toll is easier on drivers. However, the archaic charging process for the batteries of such vehicles remains quite risky.

The drivers prefer such battery-powered rickshaws as they are faster than manual rickshaws and can operate for up to eight hours after being fully charged once. Photo: Asif Mahmud Ove

No safety measures have been put in place while charging the batteries of easybikes and rickshaws. The power is drawn directly from the main electricity line, which is extremely dangerous. Photo: Asif Mahmud Ove
