Buriganga turns blue in rainwater

With the monsoon rains, the Buriganga swells and its waters shift from a lifeless black to a fleeting blue, washing away the stench of dirt and garbage. But as the floodwaters retreat, the river sinks back into its murky, poisoned state, exposing once more the scars of neglect.

The Buriganga is filled with rainwater on Saturday, Aug 23, 2025, making boating more comfortable than before. However, when the water level drops, people must cross the river while covering their noses due to the foul smell from pollution. Photo: Abdullah Al Momin

Boatmen ferry passengers across the clear Buriganga waters from the rain on Saturday, Aug 23, 2025. However, when the water recedes, boat traffic is disrupted due to poor navigability and the presence of hyacinths. Photo: Abdullah Al Momin
