Bangladesh has reported five fatalities from dengue in the past 24 hours, raising the tally of deaths from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease to 230 this year.

In the same period, 953 more dengue patients were hospitalised, bringing the total number of admissions this year to 54,559.

On Sunday, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said all five were men, aged 65, 53, 50, 35, and 24.

Two were being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while the others were admitted at Kurmitola General Hospital, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

September saw the highest hospitalisations, with 15,866 patients and 76 deaths. This month, 7,217 patients have been admitted, and 32 have died.

In the previous months this year, 10,684 hospitalisations were reported in July, 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August.

July alone accounted for 41 deaths, while previous months saw 10 fatalities in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August. No deaths were reported in March.

Among the newly admitted patients in the last 24 hours, 269 were from Dhaka’s two city corporation areas. Other regions include 197 from Dhaka division outside the city, 46 from Mymensingh, 107 from Chattogram, 93 from Khulna, 69 from Rajshahi, 23 from Rangpur, 141 from Barishal, and eight from Sylhet.

As many as 2,546 dengue patients are receiving treatment across the country, including 889 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,657 in hospitals outside the capital.

DGHS has maintained dengue hospitalisation and death records since 2000. The highest annual figures were recorded in 2023, with 321,179 hospital admissions and 1,705 deaths.
