A documentary on Nishat Mazumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to climb Mount Everest, headlines the show as the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Dhaka on Nov 21.

The world’s oldest mountain film festival will screen a 125-minute programme featuring seven award-winning films by filmmakers from Canada, the United States, Austria, Spain, and France at the Liberation War Museum Auditorium in Dhaka’s Agargaon, according to a press release.
The highlight of the show will be “Summit is a Woman”, a 13.5-minute documentary short film on Nishat directed by Muntasir Mamun and produced by Shafayet Amir.

“More than a decade after her ascent of Mount Everest, Nishat’s journey continues to inspire millions across South Asia. Yet her climb also reminds us that changing a headline does not change a system. Her summit was not merely a personal achievement—it was a call to widen the path for others,” the statement said.

The film will offer a glimpse of the gender expectations, the dual pressures of work and family, and the unspoken rules of society – those “invisible mountains” that still persist – that Nishat overcame during her journey.

“Her ascent was more than a triumph; it was an invitation to create a future where those barriers no longer stand. She didn’t only conquer a peak—she proved that boundaries can be broken. And now the responsibility to widen that path rests with all of us,” the press release said.
The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival first started in 1976 in the small town of Banff in the Canadian Rockies with the aim of celebrating the finest films on mountains, adventure, nature, and culture.

In the 1980s, the festival launched an international touring format that brings stories of adventure, environmental awareness, cultural diversity, and the indomitable human spirit to cities in 40 countries each year.

The festival first came to Dhaka in 2010 through an initiative by Kewkradong Bangladesh, allowing residents of the Bangladeshi capital to enjoy these films every year.
“A celebration of adventure, environmental awareness, and the limitless potential of people, this festival is more than a film screening—it is a festival of inspiration and creativity,” the press release said.
