The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned of temporary flooding in the low-lying riverside areas of several districts following forecasts of heavy rain.
FFWC Assistant Engineer Emon Kalyan Das told bdnews24.com on Thursday afternoon, “There is a possibility of heavy rain in Sylhet, Mymensingh and the upper sections of the northern region after the next 24 hours. This may continue for three to four days.
“Due to this, the water of the rivers in these areas may flow at the danger limit. At the same time, the low-lying areas along the rivers may be temporarily flooded.”
Though the morning bulletin noted all major rivers currently run below the danger mark, heavy downpours lashed Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions over the last 24 hours, complemented by moderate to heavy rain in India's upstream Meghalaya province.
Citing meteorological agencies, the FFWC says heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for the next five days in the Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions within the country and the adjacent upstream states of West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya in India.
Water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna system have risen in the past 24 hours and may continue increasing over the next four days, though they are expected to remain below the danger level.
The Surma River has risen in the past 24 hours and may continue rising for the next three days.
The water level of the Surma River in the northeastern part of the country has increased, which may persist for the next three days.
The water level of the Kushiyara River has decreased; which may remain stable for the next day and increase for the following two days.
During this time, the rivers may flow around the danger level in the Sylhet and Sunamganj districts and the low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers may be temporarily flooded in some places.
On the other hand, the water level of the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern Rangpur Division has increased in the last 24 hours, while the water level of the Dharla River is stable.
The water levels of these rivers may increase in the next three days. During this time, the Teesta River may flow around the warning level in the Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts.
The FFWC says that over the past 24 hours, the water levels of the Someshwari and Kangsha rivers in the northeastern Mymensingh Division have increased, while the water level of the Bhugai River has decreased.
The water levels of these rivers may increase in the next three days.
During this time, the rivers may flow around the danger level in the Netrokona, Mymensingh and Sherpur districts and the low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers may be temporarily flooded in some places.
In addition, the water levels of the Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers in the northeastern Sylhet Division have increased in the last 24 hours, which is likely to increase in the next three days.
