Gege Akutami, the creator of the manga series “Jujutsu Kaisen”, is returning to familiar ground.
Nearly a year after the series concluded abruptly in 2024, Akutami has announced a new project titled “Mojuro” — a short sequel spin-off set in the same supernatural universe that captivated readers worldwide.
The announcement comes after months of speculation about Akutami’s next move.
The author had previously suggested an interest in creating manga inspired by personal idols, though fans were clear about what they wanted most - a continuation of “Jujutsu Kaisen”.
“Mojuro” will make its debut in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue No. 41, set for release this weekend, according to Indian news platform the Hindustan Times.
The series will run for approximately six months, with three compiled volumes expected by the end of its publication.
According to leaks and early reports, the narrative will follow Okkotsu Tsurugi and Okkotsu Yuuka — the grandchildren of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, two central figures in the original series.
Their relationship, long speculated about by readers, is now confirmed through the story’s premise, with the couple having passed away in old age.
In a surprising twist, the “Jujutsu Kaisen” universe will also expand in new directions.
Myamura, a prominent leaker in the manga community, claimed that “Mojuro” will introduce extraterrestrial beings into the lore, the Hindustan Times reports.
Alongside the manga, a companion spin-off novel is reportedly in the works, written by horror author Yumeaki Hirayama.
Akutami himself addressed the project in a statement shared on X, explaining his earlier reluctance to allow other writers to develop spinoffs.
“Because manga is a medium where things can easily get out of my control, I was afraid of the title spreading in ways I couldn’t manage,” he said.
But the offer that became “Mojuro”, he explained, felt different.
Conceived initially as a loose idea, the project took shape over a series of planning meetings and will now be brought to life by artist Yuji Iwasaki.
“This will be a short-term serialisation, about half a year, collected in roughly three volumes,” Akutami said.
“The artist is the incredibly talented Yuji Iwasaki-sensei. His drawings are superb. Truly. I’d be very happy if you enjoy ‘Mojuro’ as a new entry point into the world of jujutsu.”
The first chapter of “Mojuro” will be available on Sept 7 on Viz Media’s Shonen Jump app and Shueisha’s Manga Plus.
