National Board of Revenue, or NBR, Chairman Md Abdur Rahman is keen to enforce “100 percent” filing of income tax returns next year after online submissions for individual taxpayers went up this fiscal year.
The tax returns rose by “five times” compared with last year, he said in a workshop at Agargaon’s NBR Bhaban on Sunday.
“We’ve already received nearly 1.5 million returns. We want to make it 100 percent compulsory next year, with a few exceptions. Those who have special reasons may not comply.”
Rahman pointed out that it was “not possible” for taxpayers to not file returns online.
“Returns must be filed online. Doing so saves time and money, and without any worries. Because the calculation is like that, you don’t need to know what’s taxable or what the tax rate is. You provide information, and the system will calculate.”
He said: “Online return will be easily available from Jul 1 next year. The returns of those who filed this year will be automatically saved. It’ll be in our archives for a long time. We’ll make an app. Corporate returns will have to be filed online from next year.”
On the automated system, he said “the department would be fully responsible” for any mistakes after a user had provided information.
“You’re not liable. But when you do it manually, the responsibility of errors falls entirely on you.”
In the financial year 2024-25, more than 1.49 million taxpayers filed their income tax returns online, while over 1.89 taxpayers registered for online returns.
