Bangladesh has posted a record $35.56 billion in remittances in the 2025-26 fiscal year, as resilient inflows from expatriates more than offset a slowdown in the final month.
According to Bangladesh Bank, remittance inflows totalled $30.33 billion in FY2024-25.
The strong momentum seen in recent months, however, weakened in June, the last month of the fiscal year.
Bangladeshis living abroad sent home $2.81 billion during June, the lowest monthly figure in eight months and 0.60 percent lower than in the same month a year earlier, when remittances stood at $2.822 billion.
After expatriates sent $2.89 billion in November, monthly remittance inflows exceeded $3 billion for six consecutive months from December through May. That streak ended in June.
Monthly data released by the central bank on Wednesday showed remittance inflows remained robust during the first half of June before gradually slowing and dropping sharply towards the end of the month.
Over the 30 days of June, Bangladesh received an average of $93.5 million in remittances daily.
The fiscal year ended on Jun 30, with most key economic indicators remaining resilient throughout the year despite the softer finish in June.
Remittances reached a record $3.75 billion in March, before easing to $3.43 billion in May.
March coincided with Eid-ul-Fitr, while Eid-ul-Azha fell in May, traditionally prompting expatriates to send more money home ahead of the festivals.
Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Arief Hossain Khan told bdnews24.com, "The positive trend in remittance inflows continued even after both Eids this year. It declined slightly towards the end of June, but there is no reason for concern."
Banks are currently offering Tk 123 per US dollar for remittances. At that rate, expatriates sent home about Tk 345.13 billion in June, averaging around Tk 11.50 billion a day.
Remittances remain Bangladesh's strongest economic indicator, helping support the crisis-hit economy while boosting foreign exchange reserves.
As of Tuesday, reserves stood at $32.9 billion under the BPM6 methodology and $37.56 billion on a gross basis.
