When the Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed the signing of Mustafizur Rahman at the IPL auction, the franchise marked the moment with a familiar image: the Bangladeshi fast bowler smiling over a plate of biryani.
The image, generated digitally and shared on KKR’s social media, felt apt. Kolkata’s love affair with biryani is well known, and Mustafizur had just secured the most lucrative IPL contract of his career.
At 92 million rupees, the deal took many by surprise.
Those expecting an emotional outpouring from Mustafizur were always likely to be disappointed. The left-arm seamer has long been known for his understated demeanour, rarely revealing much through words or body language.
His response to a dramatic auction was no different.
“I am very happy and excited to be part of the KKR team,” he said in a short video posted by the franchise. “See you soon.”
On his own social media, he kept it just as brief, leaning into the team colours. “Dreaming in purple,” he wrote. “Excited and can’t wait to join the purple family.”
A BIDDING WAR FEW EXPECTED
Interest in the Fizz was anticipated. His experience across formats and his consistent performances over recent seasons had ensured that. But the final figure raised eyebrows.
The bidding opened with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals before KKR joined the contest. As the teams pushed one another higher, the price climbed rapidly, eventually settling at 92 million rupees.
In doing so, Mustafizur set a new benchmark for Bangladeshi players in the IPL.
Sixteen years ago, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza became the first Bangladeshi to cross the four-million-dollar mark in the league, also with Kolkata. Last season, Mustafizur himself earned 60 million rupees with Delhi. This year’s deal moves the bar higher still.
A NEW CHAPTER IN PURPLE
The upcoming season will be Mustafizur's ninth in the IPL, but his first with KKR -- a franchise that holds special significance in Bangladeshi cricket.
Shakib Al Hasan, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, won two IPL titles with KKR and spent seven of his nine IPL seasons with the franchise.
This year, Shakib entered the auction but did not make the shortlist, leaving Mustafizur to carry on the Bangladeshi flag in purple.
