Bangladesh have collapsed to an innings and 78-run defeat inside just 28 minutes on the fourth morning of the Colombo Test, conceding the two-match series 1–0 to hosts Sri Lanka.
The visitors lost their last four wickets in the space of just 34 deliveries, as left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya completed a 5-wicket haul to seal Sri Lanka’s ninth innings victory over Bangladesh in Test cricket.
Shortly after the defeat, Najmul Hossain Shanto announced his resignation as Test captain.
Resuming with six wickets down on Saturday, Litton Das (14) was the first to fall, edging a forward defence to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis off Jayasuriya’s third ball of the day.
Mendis, returning to the field after nursing a shoulder injury, was involved again in the next over, swiftly stumping Nayeem Hasan (5) after he was beaten in flight and overbalanced at the crease.
Taijul Islam (6) gave Jayasuriya his fifth when he chipped a leading edge back to the bowler before Tharindu Ratnayake ended the innings by trapping Ebadot Hossain (6) in front in the following over.
Jayasuriya finished with 5 for 56, logging his best figures against Bangladesh, and bounced back strongly after going wicketless in the first innings.
Sri Lanka’s spinners took all but one Bangladesh wicket in the Tigers’ second innings, with Tharindu and Dhananjaya de Silva sharing the other four.
The result came as little surprise after Bangladesh had lost control of the match during a poor first-innings display with the bat, followed by wayward bowling that allowed Sri Lanka to build a commanding lead.
Pathum Nissanka was named Player of the Match for his 158, which built on his 187 in Galle to also earn him the Player of the Series award.
For Bangladesh, the innings defeat capped a disappointing campaign in which they struggled for consistency across all departments. The top order faltered in key moments, and the bowlers failed to maintain pressure in helpful conditions.
The latest loss continues a familiar pattern for Bangladesh in Sri Lanka, where they have never won a Test series.
