Dhaka, Jan 13 (bdnews24.com)— Jahangirnagar University sacked its security officer on Friday in the face of the ongoing protests of teachers and students after the killing of a student last week.
"In line with the university authorities' order on Friday morning, Mohammad Azim Uddin has been relieved of his duties," registrar Abu Bakar Siddiqui told bdnews24.com.
On the evening of Jan 8, Zubair Ahmed, a student of the Department of English, was critically wounded following beating and stabbing by a Bangladesh Chhatra League faction reportedly backed by vice-chancellor Sharif Enamul Kabir on the campus in Savar. He died the following day at a private hospital in Dhaka from excessive loss of blood.
The university has rusticated three students – all BCL activists – for their alleged involvement in the killing while police have made two arrests over the cold-blooded murder.
Teachers and students alike had been demonstrating since Monday questioning the role of the authorities in the incident. Students are boycotting classes to force the administration to accede to a four-point charter of demand, including trying Zubair's killers as per law, and resignation of the proctor and security officer. Teachers of the university have thrown their weight behind the protesting students.
Heated words were exchanged and there was an incident of scuffle among teachers favouring the vice-chancellor and those against, at a teachers' association meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. After adjourning Thursday's meeting, Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association president professor M A Mamun was harassed by proctor Arzu Miah.
Teachers and students of the university will hold a mass gathering at the foot of Omor Ekushey on the campus on Saturday condemning the incidents and to press on with their demands.
