Student protesters of Tejgaon College who blocked the road in the Farmgate area protesting the death of a fellow peer following a clash between two groups at the college hostel, have left after almost four hours.
Traffic movement resumed after 2:00pm on Sunday when the students withdrew from the road, said Kyashainu Marma, chief of Tejgaon Police Station.
Earlier, the students took to the streets around 10:15am on Sunday, bringing traffic to a halt on one of the capital’s major thoroughfares.
Due to the road blockade, severe traffic congestion developed in Tejgaon, Karwan Bazar, and surrounding areas.
From the beginning, police repeatedly requested the students to clear the road, but they continued their sit-in protest.
A clash between two groups at the Tejgaon College hostel took place on Dec 6, leaving several people injured. Among them, a student named Sakibul Hasan Rana died while undergoing treatment on the night of Dec 10.
The deceased Sakibul was a Higher Secondary student of Tejgaon College.
On Dec 11, his classmates blocked the Farmgate road for two hours, demanding an investigation into the killing and protesting his death.
Although they withdrew after receiving assurances from the police, the students once again took to the streets on Sunday, staging fresh protests.
