Daffodil International University (DIU) has built a smart biogas plant at its Daffodil Smart City campus in Birulia, Savar, as part of its efforts to promote sustainable energy, environmental protection and the development of a carbon-neutral campus.
The plant was inaugurated on Monday through the ceremonial ignition of a biogas burner by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Md Sabur Khan, according to a media statement.
Among those present at the event were agricultural scientist and Project Convenor Prof MA Rahim, head of the Department of Agricultural Science and recipient of the Independence Award 2026, along with Fizar Ahmed, director of the Embedded System Research Center, researchers, faculty members, officials and students involved in the project.
Speakers at the event highlighted the role of research-driven innovation and sustainable technologies in higher education institutions and acknowledged the contributions of those involved in implementing the initiative.
Prof Rahim said the project represented more than physical infrastructure and reflected a broader vision for sustainable development.
“DIU’s initiative demonstrates how higher education institutions can play a significant role in renewable energy adoption, energy self-sufficiency, and environmental sustainability,” he said.
The Smart Biogas Plant was developed under the supervision of Fizar Ahmed with support from the university’s Planning and Development Department.
According to the statement, the facility can generate around 20 to 30kWh of electricity each day by converting organic waste into usable energy, which is expected to strengthen campus waste management and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Fizar said the plant would also function as a practical research platform for students and researchers.
He said embedded sensors and automated monitoring systems had been integrated into the facility to make the biogas production process more efficient and technology-driven.
In the statement, university authorities described the project as a milestone in DIU’s wider environmental strategy, adding that plans are in place to establish an integrated smart waste management system as part of efforts to develop a fully carbon-neutral campus.
The university said it hopes the initiative will encourage other higher education institutions in Bangladesh to expand renewable energy use and adopt research-based sustainability practices.
